Dr. Mariusz Kalczewiak

My name is Dr. Mariusz Kalczewiak. I am originally from Poland. Currently, I am working at the University of Potsdam where I am cross-affiliated at the Department for Slavic Studies and at the Department for Jewish Studies.

My research project explores the evolution of Polish-Jewish masculinities between the 1890s and 1930s. It explores how Polish-Jewish ideals of masculinity were constructed and performed, making an argument that the ethnic history in Eastern Europe can be nuanced and reassessed through the gender perspective.

Thanks to the PNB Individual Grant, I will soon complete my book manuscript “Men of Valor and Anxiety. Polish-Jewish Masculinities and the Challenge of Modernity.” This PNB grant allowed me to focus on the write-up phase and offered a possibility for conceptualizing new research projects for the future.
