Dr. Marvin Reiff

As part of my research at the Faculty of Law of the European University Viadrina, I explore the roles and limits of private law in an era of climate overshoot (i.e. the exceedance of the temperature goals agreed under the Paris Agreement). Specifically, I examine the theoretical, doctrinal, and discursive compatibility of these new climatic realities with various subfields of private law, in particular corporate law (e.g. ownership structures) and tort law (e.g. climate litigation). Methodologically, I draw on the interdisciplinary approach of responsive legal scholarship and seek to develop the law further in an environmentally sensitive way without compromising its autonomy. With the PNB fellowship, I take the first step toward my habilitation.
